How the Pace Count Distance Calculator works

Pace counting is a navigation method that works without GPS. First walk a measured 100 m course and count every time one foot, usually the left, touches the ground. That number is your paces per 100 m. Distance = paces counted ÷ paces per 100 m × 100. Your count rises on steep ground, in mud or snow, and with a heavy pack, so calibrate on terrain like the route. A common count is 55 to 70 paces per 100 m. Example: with Your paces per 100 m 62, Paces counted 540, and Distance you want to measure 800 m, the result is Distance walked (m) = 871; Distance walked (km) = 0.87; Distance walked (miles) = 0.54.
