How the Tiered Cake Servings Calculator works

The top face of a round tier has an area of π × diameter² ÷ 4. Dividing by the area of one slice gives the servings: a wedding slice of 1 by 2 inches has 2 square inches, and a dessert slice of 2 by 2 inches has 4. This matches the usual cake charts, such as about 57 slices for a 12 inch tier. The method assumes each tier is about 4 inches tall, so a tall tier cut in two layers gives the same count. Many couples keep the top tier for later, so subtract it if you plan to do that. Bakers may also serve some guests a smaller slice, so ask your baker for their own chart. Example: with Bottom tier diameter 12 in, Middle tier diameter (0 for none) 9 in, Top tier diameter (0 for none) 6 in, Slice size Wedding slice (1 x 2 in), and Guests 100, the result is Total cake servings = 103; Bottom tier servings = 57; Middle tier servings = 32.
